Granny Hair Trend: Are You Ready to Age 10 Years?

The granny hair trend has blown up on Instagram, “#GrannyHair.” And my question is WHY? A friend messaged me right after I saw my Matrix post an article to Facebook from a nincompoop at Elite Daily. I put the granny hair trend piece on the backburner for the Hair Police until I had a chance to read this ass’ work, who clearly isn’t a beauty professional, just an editor reporting on a beauty trend. What I found most irritating were her offensive terms for the elderly and aging.

Happy Monday beauty mavens and thank you for visiting Ask the Pro Stylist’s Hair Police column. I have written about the granny hair trend before, noticing it a few years back at a PR event. An attendee sported the gray hair color, and to be honest I was horrified. It aged the twenty-something 10 years, easy.

Some of the pictures you see scattered throughout are from the Hair Tectonics Instagram page. The girls are heavily made up. Search #GrannyHair on the social media site and you’ll see many looks, and you will understand how the gray hair look instantly ages you, especially on the brave souls who didn’t wear makeup.

The brainiac writer from Elite Daily selected great photos for her grey-hair piece. In an effort to be witty, the author used terms such as old lady, geriatrics, old geezers, and grandma…way to search up synonyms! While she focused on the current beauty trend of going gray, she obviously doesn’t realize many grey prematurely…and aren’t old geezers.

I have been grey since the age of 8-years-old…yesss, 8. Genetics plays a huge rule in how young people are when they LOSE PIGMENT IN THEIR HAIR, not only age.

Gray hair instantly ages the skin, creating a washed-out tone…hence all of the young beauties posing on Insta for the granny hair trend in heavy makeup.

There are ways to brighten gray hair for those that want to stay au naturale, (and there is nothing wrong with embracing your age) however, maintaining the granny hair trend of turning gray with the help of bleach and hair color isn’t easy. Nor is it a simple task to return to your natural hair color once there has been a drastic change.

Thankfully the readers of the Elite Daily granny hair trend piece are more intelligent than the writer who stated, the “chic color trend” looks good on all styles and “complexions.” No, no it doesn’t! The lighter skin girls with no makeup look washed out with gray hair.

Don’t get me wrong…I love color: all hair color excites me. And I am OK with experimenting with the gray hair look. But, as someone who is in the business to keep people looking younger, this granny hair trend perplexes me, as it did my 50-something friend who said,

I saw this new trend and think it only works on young women. This look on me would be redundant. Old look on an old broad. Yuck!

No, she isn’t an old broad by any stretch of the imagination, well maybe to the ignoramus from Elite Daily she is, however, the granny hair trend is clearly for those under 30, who don’t get carded. A few times checking your I.D. or getting called ma’am might have you running to the salon for a dye-back.
