Over 40 Hair Don’ts: The Hair Police Strikes Again

Hair don’ts are, more often than not, what I notice. Sadly my eyes focus on what shouldn’t be, but I do so appreciate when I see fabulousness! This Monday’s hair police spotted a hair faux pas most women over 40 are guilty of, so it isn’t awful, however, I have a few suggestions to make the style current and look fashionable while you’re at it.

In an effort to make the world a more beautiful experience, Ask the Pro Stylist has entrusted the hair police to pinpoint errors that are easily corrected. Perhaps you don’t care if your hair looks like it was hit with a speeding pancake, but trust me, I care, and I am looking. Oh, and by the way, I am the hair police.

My curse is that I notice every hair mistake possible. And please understand I am hardest on myself, especially when I do someone else’s hair.

This Monday’s hair don’ts date back to the 80s when the jaws clip became popular. Seems like it hasn’t left us.

I saw a woman in her mid-to-late forties running errands on Friday. She was dressed in jeans and boots, which according to the Fashion Police is better than yoga pants and sneakers. But, she wore her hair half up/ half down, fastened by a jaws clip. It wasn’t a butterfly clip with adornments, just a jaws clip with a puffy bang area, replicated above.

So, why is this one of my hair don’ts? After all, the clips were designed to grab and go and fix hair into a quick style without too much effort.

First off, it is dated. If you wore it as a child/teen/young adult and still do, the clip and hairstyle will age you. Secondly, there are much more flattering run-and-go looks that are trendy and stylish.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my jaws clip for cleaning my house, working out, styling my hair and washing my face. But, when I leave my home, the clip comes out, and I either throw on a hat if my hair is awful, or wrap it in a bun or ponytail.

There are alternatives to adding volume in the front of the head such as texturizing powder, a neatly tucked pony or a pretty clip, but steer clear of the butterfly clips as a means to a hairstyle, it just doesn’t work, especially if you are over 40.

Come for a visit next week to see if one of your hair don’ts have fallen victim to the hair police. Until then, happy styling!
