Over 40 Hairstyles: Straight or Curly?

Over 40 hairstyles bring concerns from what length is appropriate, if bangs work to should the hair be worn straight or curly. Today focuses on which hairstyle works best for women over 40.

Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties! This Wednesday’s Q & A comes from a new client (I do hope she returns). During her consultation we discussed over 40 hairstyles, and which length and style suits her neck, face shape and age.

We concluded that a medium length style with bounce matched her hair concerns best. But just because your 40 plus, doesn’t mean you need to cut your hair off. It simply signifies you need to adjust your style, slightly.

Over 40 hairstyles shouldn’t hang straight. Flat, limp, pin straight hair draws the face downward, which in turn enhances saggy skin, wrinkles and puffy eyes. Even if you don’t like curls, or don’t have a natural wave, there should be some type of texture. This creates the illusion of lifting the face and deceiving Mother Nature.

I have compiled a few over 40 hairstyles in the gallery for your viewing pleasure. Click on the photos to enlarge. My tips for ageless hair are as follows.

  • Cover the gray! (But only visit a salon professional.)
  • Bangs are great to hide forehead wrinkles, but not thick bangs that are curled under.
  • Don’t date yourself with a hairstyle from the 80s/90s. Make your look current.
  • Lighten up! Black doesn’t work; it brings out the ashy tone of the skin. Yes, as we age our skin grays too. Gradually go lighter from your natural shade, but it doesn’t have to be too drastic.

If you have a beauty, hair or nails question for me you’d like to see answered here next Wednesday similar to this week’s over 40 hairstyles, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com. Until then, happy styling!
