Tuesday How-to

Happy Tuesday Gorgeous. It’s been a while since Ask the Pro Stylist listed a how-to. Unfortunately, life often gets in the way. However, I have collaborated with a guest author for a Tuesday special edition. This week’s guest author provides a simple summer-proof beauty regimen.

5 Steps to a Summer-Proof Beauty Regimen

Summer-Proof Beauty Regimen

As the weather changes, so do your personal needs. And with the warmer season upon us, it may be time to rethink your daily routine, from the clothes you wear to the products you use on your face.

Summer may be the perfect time to break out the shorts, kick back, and relax. But, it’s not the time to skimp on your beauty regimen. Here are five ways you can adjust your summer beauty routine to beat the summer heat:

Cleanse Your Face Daily

Excess humidity, heat, and sun exposure can cause your skin to become oily and more prone to breakouts. Therefore, if you don’t cleanse your face at least once a day, sunscreen, oils, and sweat can accumulate, resulting in breakouts and a dull, uneven complexion.

Both before going to bed and after waking up, wash your face with a cleanser that removes excess makeup, dirt, and grime that may have built up, such as this pH balancing cleanser. Cleansing twice daily will help remove these impurities and give you glowing skin.

Use Products That Provide Sun Protection

No summer beauty routine is complete without SPF. Using a broad-range sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 every day will help protect you from ultraviolet (UV) rays that can inhibit collagen production and even lead to permanent damage.

When sweating or engaging in water activities, you may also want to use a water-resistant sunscreen that won’t wash off. When doing so, be sure to reapply more often throughout the day to ensure you’re always protected. Physicians recommend reapplying sunscreen at least once every two hours to continuously shield any exposed skin from the sun’s rays.

Some of your beauty favorites may require some extra sun protection, which is perfectly okay. However, it’s definitely something to keep in mind. If you use any over-the-counter acne treatments or prescribed retinol skincare products, it’s especially important to apply sunscreen liberally. Retinoids aid in collagen growth and help prevent and reverse signs of sun damage, but can also increase sun sensitivity if you don’t apply them at night and follow up with proper sun protection.

Switch Up Your Moisturizer

Though humidity might make your skin feel hydrated, it shouldn’t replace your daily moisturizer. A lack of hydration can actually cause your skin to produce excess oil to overcompensate. Even if you have an oily complexion, it’s important to keep your skin nourished with products that won’t clog your pores or feel heavy on your face.

During the summer months, try using a water-based moisturizer. These products may be absorbed quicker by your skin and leave minimal residue, keeping your face feeling fresh, light, and radiant. Lightweight moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid may also provide a matte finish for those who want to prevent a shiny face.

Protect Your Pucker

With the sun beating down, it’s important to protectevery exposed area of your face from the sun’s harmful rays. Though often overlooked, the lips serve as a common site for skin cancers if left unprotected. Constant movement from extreme heat to air-conditioned areas can also make your lips dry, flaky, and chapped, which is just another reason why you should show your lips a little extra TLC during the summer.

You can effectively combat the sun’s wear on your lips by using a smoothing lip exfoliator to gently scrub away dead skin cells. Additionally, applying a broad-range SPF lip treatment throughout the day will help continuously keep your lips moisturized. You can also apply an overnight lip treatment before bed to grant your lips time to hydrate while you sleep.

Keep Makeup Mishaps At Bay

You probably dread the thought of your makeup melting off your face, but during the summer, it’s almost always bound to happen. Even though heat and makeup aren’t exactly compatible, you don’t have to avoid makeup altogether. In fact, it only takes a few small adjustments to avoid makeup mishaps.

One way you can change up your beauty regimen for summer is by switching to products that can withstand the elements and don’t feel heavy on your face. Use a primer to hold your makeup in place and follow up with a lightweight foundation containing SPF to prevent buildup and protect your face from sun exposure.

Be sure to also invest in waterproof makeup that won’t melt, smudge, or smear throughout the day, and limit concealer use to isolated areas to cover blemishes or uneven pigmentation. Beauty products with long-wearing formulas won’t budge, even in the face of sweat or water.

In addition, resist the urge to layer on extra powder even if you notice a little extra shine on your face. Instead, lightly pat your face with an oil-absorbing blotting paper, and only follow up with a pressed powder if needed.
