Aging Hair Issues & the Steps to Revitalize Hair

Aging hair issues are the focus of today’s Q&A. In addition, you will learn the steps that will revitalize hair to a more youthful appearance. If your hair suffers from inexplicable dryness and brittleness, read on for tips to have healthy, shiny hair over 40.

Whoop, whoop, its Hump Day gorgeous! Welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s Q&A of the week. A friend has aging hair issues. As a beautiful member of the over 45 crowd, she has begun to notice lackluster hair. Specifically, her hair is dry and brittle. Ironically, her naturally wavy hair doesn’t want to hold a curl anymore either.

She is not alone in her aging hair issues. Many of us gray early. In addition we might notice excessively oily hair, which is also a sign hair will thin. However, dry, brittle hair might go unnoticed, placing the blame on chemical treatments.

While over-processing, heat, and extensive use of smoothing treatments will damage the hair and cause dry brittle hair, many times the cause is simple aging. Our oil glands shrink as we age. As a result, they secrete less oil that naturally coats the follicle, creating dryness.

In addition, as we age elasticity is lost in our skin and hair. This causes brittleness…color and lightening exacerbates this. To combat this your stylist should suggest protein-rich hair treatments such as PM Shines, Olaplex, Continuum or the new Redken pH-Bonder (details below).

Also, vitamins rich in biotin are helpful in treating deficiencies that cause brittleness. You should seek the advice of a physician or nutritionist to see if it is lacking. Biotin is necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty acids and the metabolism of amino acids and fats. When present these are all necessary for healthy, shiny hair, skin and nails.

Additionally, deep condition once a week to revitalize the hair. Add hair oil to your regimen for shine and moisture. Discuss with your stylist what products they recommend for your hair type.

As Olaplex and Continuum have changed the hair color game, Redken introduces its new pH-Bonder. It is a complete solution to promote bond integrity during a professional hair color or lightening service, focusing on aging hair issues. As a result hair is softer and smoother while preserving the health of hair during each salon visit.

If you visit a Redken salon, ask your stylist/colorist about this new innovation. The synergistic trio of pH-Bonder is a unique bond protecting system. It is compatible with all hair types and specifically optimized for usage with Redken lighteners and colors. From the salon service to at-home maintenance, you will notice younger looking hair immediately.
