Arrogant Hairstylists: Ditch The Tude For Better Business & Be Nice

Arrogant hairstylists are unfortunately oftentimes more common than not. The attitude leaves the rest of us in the field who value relationships with a bad reputation and a bad taste in our mouths. No matter how excellent you become, there is always someone better. Therefore, arrogant hairstylists have been hit by this week’s Hair Police.

Happy Monday gorgeous, and welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s weekly Hair Police rant. Today’ topic: Arrogant hairstylists. Sadly, we all know at least one.

We are in the people business, which understandably could sometimes be difficult. However it is the people who finance us, it is the people who keep us busy, and it is because of the people that we are employed. There is simply is no time or room for arrogance. Confidence, generosity, kindness, and gratefulness are traits all hairstylists should possess. But don’t be an overconfident know-it-all, which translates to arrogant hairstylists. Instead, try to find the balance.

Arrogant hairstylists never want to burn bridges, however your attitude will separate you from your peers, especially in beauty school. Your positive contacts will only come in hand in the future. You never know what lies ahead. The person you hated in cosmetology classes could one day be your boss or open a door for you that you wouldn’t have known existed. You might not like that person, but you should always be kind and respectful. And who knows, you might find something in common.

Winn Claybaugh is the author of Be Nice (Or Else)! and has been touted as “the best motivational speaker in the nation” by Larry King. He is also the founder and co-owner of Paul Mitchell The School. The culture of Paul Mitchell is one that promotes positivity and reinforces the concept of being nice, which is at the heart of Claybaugh’s book.

I highly recommend it for all future professionals, whether or not you get your start within one of the Paul Mitchell schools or another cosmetology program, and also for all who currently work within the beauty business. It makes a great holiday gift idea for those arrogant hairstylists who might just need a nudge in the right direction.
