Balding Boyfriend Hair Care Concerns Answered

Balding Boyfriend Hair Care Concerns Answered

Today’s hair care question comes from a concerned young woman whose boyfriend is balding and starting the dreaded comb over.

Dear Pro,

My boyfriend is balding, right on the top of his head. He is only 26 and very self conscious of it. He has been letting it grow over and attempting to cover it, but it looks worse. What should I do?

Thanks for writing in with your boyfriend’s hair care concern, but I don’t know if you are going to like my answer, because you really shouldn’t do anything. It is his hair and he may resent you for making comments on a very sensitive issue.

At first glance, someone may think you have an issue with a young balding man. Love is blind, regardless of how we look, if the superficial bothers you that much, then perhaps an introspective glance is warranted, however, I am not a therapist, and will address your boyfriend’s balding hair care concern.

Yes, comb overs are pretty bad, especially on younger men. If only the comb over is annoying you, then point out pictures, when you see them, of handsome men who have cherished their baldness such as Bruce Willis as compared to comb over nightmares like Donald Trump.

Recommend a short haircut that enhances his features, not hides them and if your boyfriend’s baldness is really weighing on his self-esteem; there are ways to help. First and foremost, early balding may be a result of something else and a medical professional should be seen to rule out illness, vitamin deficiencies or health issues. Strides have been made in the hair replacement industry and the “hair plugs” no longer look as fake as they did 20 years ago. There are also natural remedies to consider, such as those from Bio Follicle that were written about here last week, which stimulates blood flow in the scalp and therefore hair growth.

If you love your boyfriend, do not draw attention to this very touchy subject, unless you feel confident he won’t take it the wrong way. As a hairstylist, I have told many balding men they would look great with certain haircuts and it was always received well because I was boosting their ego rather than insulting their baldness.

I hope I have helped with your balding boyfriend’s hair care concerns. If you have a hair care or beauty question, write in to me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com.

Happy Styling!
