Best Hair Care Products for Color Treated Hair

What are the best hair care products for color treated hair?

Today’s beauty question comes from a client who has dyed her hair from the dreaded box (GASP) and is looking for the best hair care products for color treated hair.

A lovely new guest graced my salon chair today; a young twenty-something looking for a mahogany color, however her greatest need was to even out the three or four colors present in her hair. This tends to be a common problem occurring from at-home box color use and experimenting between different shades.

After choosing her hair color and prepping the hair for dying, the mahogany shade was applied, which turned out beautiful, especially with her skin tone. During the process she asked if she should condition her hair because it is naturally oily and feels greasy the next day. As the hair was damaged due to color overload prior to today’s chemical treatment, I provided her with the following advice and then gave her a list of the best hair care products to purchase for color treated hair.

  • Avoid washing the hair every day, even if it is oily. For those who are accustomed to daily shampooing, I suggested starting off washing it every other day. Use a dry shampoo if the hair feels dirty and avoid excessive styling products, unless it is absolutely necessary. Red hair colors fade fast, so to keep the color lasting as long as possible, try not to wash it frequently.
  • Use a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair.
  • When conditioning in the shower, step away from the stream after shampooing, squeeze the excess water from the hair, apply a quarter-sized amount of conditioner (not on the scalp), comb it through to the ends while you tend to the rest of the body and then rinse well. If you can take it, run some cool water over the hair to remove any residue left behind.

Well then, what are the best hair care products for color treated hair? My first answer is NOTHING bought in a pharmacy or supermarket chain. Always ask your own professional hairstylist what he or she prefers you to use based on the color line they have applied on you. However, below is a list of a few of my favorite hair care products for color treated hair.
