Braid Tutorial: How to do the Messy 5-Strand Braid

Welcome to how-to Tuesday. As the warmer months are finally here, the hairstyle focus turns to summer hair. Last week we learned how to create a faux bob and the wob, a wet faux bob, and this Tuesday offers a braid tutorial, which was sent to Ask the Pro Stylist by braid guru Melissa Cook of Latest-Hairstyles.com. According to Melissa, the Messy5-Strand Braid is “really just a simple weaving of the hair back and forth in an over under pattern.”

Her simple steps in the braid tutorial are just that, simple enough to do on yourself, a friend or your daughter. Braid Tutorial: How to do the 5-Strand Braid:

1. Separate the hair into five strands.
2. Start with the right side, take the two farthest strands and cross the right one over the left.
3. Drop the strand in your right hand and cross the one in your left hand under the next strand on the left.
4. Now drop the strand on the right and cross the original strand over the next one on the left.
5. Then drop that right strand and cross the original strand under the next one on the left, which creates the over, under, over method.
6. Begin the same steps, but work in the opposite direction towards the right side. The model in the braid tutorial photograph below holds the original strand, which is the farthest left strand, to keep it out of the way.
7. Hold the furthest left piece out of the way, and take the next two strands, and cross the strand on the left under the strand on the right.
8. Cross the strand in your left over over the next strand on the right.
9. Then cross the strand in your left under the farthest right strand.
10. Drop that strand, which is now the furthest strand on the right and then work in the opposite direction, crossing the right strand under the left one next to it.
11. Cross the right strand over the next strand on the left.
12. Cross the right strand under the next strand on the left.
13. Continue this weaving method of over, under, over, until you get to the bottom of the hair.
14. Secure the end with an elastic band or ribbon.
