Oily Hair Issues: Combat Oily Hair with Great Hair Care

Combat oily hair with great hair care tips. A reader and recently colored client both had the same question: What can I use for my oily hair? Read on for professional hair care products that deal with the issue of oily hair.

Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties and welcome to another edition of Ask the Pro Stylist. Today’s question for Wednesday is about oily hair, from a reader and client.

Hi Deidre! My question to you is…I have very oily hair. I can wash it in the morning and by nighttime it looks greasy. I’ve tried vinegar and powder and all the home remedies, but nothing seems to work. What kind of shampoo should I use? Is there a solution to this problem?

Thanks for writing in Jamie. The day I received your question I had colored a client’s hair red who asked the same thing. I have compiled a few products that should help and a few tricks that also relieve oily hair.

I too have oily hair, and the good news is this, oily hair can take a beating and still look healthy, but please don’t ever take that as advice to color at home. Always have chemical services performed in a salon. To be brief, oily hair means oily scalp and skin, which assist in keeping it youthful. As the body ages, less oil is secreted, so oily hair isn’t such a bad thing. The bad news is, oily hair lies flat, especially at the end of the day.

Look for oily hair care products that say “chelating shampoos.” If your hair is color treated, you want shampoo that will not strip the hair color you spent a lot to have. I recommend Kenra Professional Clarifying Shampoo and/or Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo Two. You still need to condition, so use the partnering pairs of conditioner for each.

If your hair is not color treated then I would suggest Head and Shoulders or Finesse, or any shampoo with citrus in it. A dry shampoo such as Kerastase Paris Powder Bluff Texturizing Dry Shampoo eliminates oil and freshens the scalp and hair, even if you wash daily. Additionally, shampooing with hot water and rinsing with cool helps to remove excess residue.

I hope these ideas have helped. If you have a hair, beauty or nails question similar to Jamie’s and Ashley’s oily hair query, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com.
