Common Hair Care Mistake: Keep the Skincare on the Skin

A common hair care mistake one should always avoid is using skincare as a conditioner; otherwise the Hair Police will issue a violation for your question of the week, instead of featuring it in the weekly Q&A.

Happy Monday beautiful, and welcome to this week’s Ask the Pro Stylist Hair Police column. A reader wrote in with a question regarding a common hair care mistake. I was saving it for my Wednesday’s Q&A, but with the holidays fell very behind, and felt it was a better fit for the Hair Police. Now that I am back on track, let’s see if you have ever attempted to use skincare as a conditioner.

A reader wrote in with the following:

Hi, So I just recently highlighted my hair and it is so stiff and dry. I put Aquaphor ointment in my hair to hopefully help it, and now I cannot get it out even after washing it. Ooops. Any recommendations on how to get it out?

I emailed him back immediately, but he never responded…most likely because I called him by his wrong name.

Hi Knick, (his name is Rob – my ooops) Thanks for writing in. Question for you: Why did you put skin cream in your hair and not a hair care product? LOL, Sorry, just curious. Whoever highlighted your hair should have recommended a good conditioner. However, I would recommend a good clarifying shampoo to remove the Aquaphor, one that won’t dry it out, and then use a professional conditioner to keep your highlights hydrated. Use Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two, and if that doesn’t remove it then Shampoo Three. To keep it hydrated I recommend the Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde line. Hope this helps.

I can only assume Rob is among many who have attempted this common hair care mistake. Skin lotion should never substitute as a conditioner, and visa versa.

One of the only products that span the beauty spectrum of both the skin and hair worlds is Argan Oil. Skin and hair are made up of layers, however while similar, they are both different. Aquaphor is used for intense dryness, chapped skin and minor burns and cuts. After a highlight, the cuticle is open, and the hair sucked up the skincare lotion, which left a layer that stuck to the hair shaft. The skincare acts as a protectant, and that is its job to coat the skin. Professional hair care penetrates and repairs as well as coats with ingredients suited to the hair.

The Paul Mitchell Blonde Line contains KerActive, a protein that “hugs” the hair to help repair damage. Safflower oleosomes replenish lost moisture in the cuticle for stronger, healthier hair with long-lasting hydration and shine.
