Happy Monday beautiful, and welcome to this week’s Ask the Pro Stylist’s Hair Police where I discuss hair care horrors. This week we will focus on the most common hair care mistakes that will dull sheen and cause unnecessary damage.
Most Common Hair Care Mistakes
Over-washing – The simple truth is hair doesn’t need to be washed daily. Letting our natural oil secreted through the sebaceous glands (located below the scalp within each hair follicle) is nature’s way of conditioning both the skin and hair. When we over-wash we remove the natural oil and also dull any hair color we might have had done. If you are a daily washer, skip to every other day, and if you are at every other day, try adding a third day of no washing. Invest in a good dry shampoo if your hair loses body quickly or doesn’t smell fresh.
Split ends – Even the best conditioning and hair care products in the world will not eliminate split ends my darlings. This is a fact. The only way to remove breakage, damage and split ends is to cut them off. PERIOD! If the average hair growth is approximately one-inch per month, then cutting ½ and inch every 2 months will still ensure substantial hair growth. **Please keep in mind that health, hormones, and genetics also determine hair growth.
Professional Products – I have said this repeatedly; the best hair care products are the professional ones. They work synergistically with the chemical services you received for optimal maintenance. Pantene makes your hair feel smooth because a waxy substance is included in the ingredients that coats the cuticle, causing extreme buildup. Just leave a cup of it out for a day or more and see what happens when it is exposed to the air. And Dawn Dish Detergent should be used on dishes, not hair. It will strip healthy nutrients from the hair and dull color. However, if you think it properly removes hair color you are sadly mistaken. It pushes it deeper within the cortex, making removal more difficult. The dye molecules will then mix with other hair color when and if it is applied that will produce negative results.
Coloring at Home – All l can say is just stop! You have no clue what you are doing. You are making it worse. SMH! Read here about hair color at home.
Brushing wet hair – This is one of the biggest, most common hair mistakes made. It sounds redundant because we use a brush when drying wet hair, however, we shouldn’t try to brush knots out of wet hair, as it will cause breakage. Healthy hair with good elasticity stretches up to 50% of its length when wet. A brush with fine teeth will pull on that hair even more, especially when tangled, and if the hair has poor elasticity, it will break. Instead, detangle the hair before it is wet with a soft bristled brush. Comb through conditioner with a wide-toothed comb after shampooing. Use a wide-toothed comb after you have lightly towel dried and applied a good foundation such as a leave-in conditioner, color protect mist, or heat seal.
