Cover Your Gray in 3 Easy Ways

Cover your gray in 3 easy ways with tips from Ask the Pro Stylist and the Hair Police. Nothing ruins a sleek and sexy hairstyle than a white line of regrowth amid a great brunette shade, and this is just what was spotted on Thursday in Times Square.

I’m sure the pretty lady didn’t think someone as meticulous as me would notice her glaring white roots, which prompted today’s cover your gray in 3 easy ways piece. She and two friends were obviously celebrating in Times Square for the holidays, dressed to the nines with hair coiffed to perfection. They were somewhere in their mid-forties and enjoying a girls day out when the Hair Police spotted my pet peeve.

The first thing my friends who need a touch-up say to me after hello is, “I know, don’t look, I need my roots done.” So, I didn’t surprise myself when the grays of the woman who was enjoying a day out in NYC popped into my eyeballs. Everything about her was spot on, makeup, fashion and a great blowout; however, an almost one-inch area of white regrowth overshadowed what could have been stellar style.

If you find yourself in need of a touch-up, but have no time to head to a salon, Ask the Pro Stylist has 3 easy ways to cover your gray in between your professional applications. After all, there is no need to let that white hair reveal your true age!

Hair mascara, or even regular mascara in a pinch, is the simplest and fastest way to temporarily cover your gray. During a conversation with a friend one day my boys were shocked when I revealed I had gray hair. And then I mentioned I use hair mascara to conceal my grays. Hair mascara is available in most retail chains such as Duane Reade, ironically located near the nails supplies. Cover Your Gray 2-in-1 Applicator could be found at Ulta.

Strategic hairstyling will also cover your gray, depending upon where your gray hair lingers most. Mine is noticeable at my part. Create a new part, a zigzag part or wear braids, ponytails or even a hat. If the gray is focused around the hairline of the face, keeping a layered style will allow the hair to fall on the face, framing it and hiding the gray hair. The woman in question was a darer brunette, going a little lighter would prevent such a stark contrast when regrowth appears.

Touch-up the rergrowth to cover your gray in between salon services. While I am not an advocate or a fan of at-home hair color, I have recently sampled Madison Reed, which had great gray coverage and isn’t damaging as boxes found in the pharmacy. A consultant will advise you on the best color to choose, and the product is free of ammonia, PPD and resorcinol. It is a home delivery option and a good idea to keep around the house for those last-minute moments, like the woman in the city, where a touch-up is necessary.

Visit me next week for another Hair Police violation that I will undoubtedly see over Christmas. Until then, Happy Styling, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and don’t forget to cover your gray! xoxo
