Create Natural Looking Curls For the Holidays

Create natural looking curls this holiday season with the right size curling iron. A reader wrote in wanting to know which size iron would make natural looking curls for her thick and frizzy hair.

Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties, and welcome to this week’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. A reader, Shivani, wrote in asking what size iron she should use to create natural looking curls.

I have thick and frizzy hair. I would have to straighten my hair before I curl because it is quite frizzy. I also have layered hair. Which curling iron size would be better for my hair; 25mm or 32mm?
I want curls that look natural and will last, but not curls that I could get from a straightener because then it would be a waste of my money to buy a curling iron (curls that are not too tight and not too loose, somewhere in the middle).

For the natural looking curls Shivani is searching for, I suggested the larger barrel iron. However, I also have a few more tips for curls that hold, especially throughout the holidays.

Hair that is naturally thick and frizzy will generally hold any size curl. Shivani’s hair is frizzy, so I don’t suggest blow-drying, straightening and then curling. It is excessive heat, which will only damage the hair more, and in turn, add to the frizz. Blow-drying with a good hair product such as Redken Frizz Dismiss Smoothing Control Cream and a large round brush or a large paddle brush will smooth the hair enough to prepare it for ironwork.
