How-To Curl Thick Hair

How-to curl thick hair is the question of the week, posed by a reader who came across my blog on Pinterest. Chloe wants a few hairstyling tips to help curl her super thick hair.

Whoop, whoop it’s Hump Day, and time for another weekly Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. This Wednesday Chloe wrote in wanting advice on how-to curl her dense, stubborn hair.

Hi, I just come across your blog by using Pinterest and was wondering if you could help me? My hair is super thick and just doesn’t like to hold a curl at all, no matter how I try. Any tips or ways you know to help curl my super thick hair?

Thanks.

I had a few tips for Chloe on how-to curl her hair, but wanted to ask the texture specialist, my friend and coworker Jeannie, at Cactus Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School as well. We both agreed that without actually feeling and seeing her hair, we couldn’t provide precise guidance.

Adding texture to your hair is the first step, but the best way to do that is in a salon with a professional. In other words, perhaps getting a body wave to help the hair take a curl would help. If that is not an option, then invest in professional hairstyling products that help a curl to last such as Paul Mitchell Worked Up, however without actually touching your hair it is hard to recommend the proper product.

Make sure your hair is completely dry before you curl. To keep the integrity of the hair, the iron shouldn’t be heated over 360 degrees. When curling, take vertical sections the same size or smaller than the iron you are using. Curl from the bottom up and spray each strand before you curl. Pin each curl after you use the iron to set; you’ll need a lot of pin curl clips, and then spray again.

I hope these how-to curl thick hair tips help. If you have a question similar to Chloe’s you’d like to see featured here, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com. Until then, happy styling!
