Curl tutorial: Tips for perfect curls

A curl tutorial is this Wednesday’s Hump Day topic. A reader wanted tips for perfect curls, so this week’s Q&A offers a few suggestions for effortless waves.

Curl tutorial or Hump Day? Yes on the curl tutorial, just not for Wednesday’s question of the week, as I missed this week’s Q&A due to unforeseen circumstances but, wanted to answer the next question in queue so not to fall behind. Yet again Ask the Pro Stylist has fallen behind and is a day late and a dollar short. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love my readers any less. So, whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties, and welcome to this weeks Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist.

Tricia wrote in wanting a curl tutorial similar to one I had done earlier this year:

I was viewing your blog that you did last February on how to curl short hair.  My hair is slightly longer than that mentioned in the picture.  When I curl my hair and try to do what you are telling, my curl at the end is sticking straight out. Do you have any tips to avoid that?

My initial curl tutorial went as follows:

  • Blow dry with your fingers and then lift the hair at the root with a large round or paddle brush.
  • Section the hair. It is easier to curl your own head, especially in the back, if it is in sections.
  • Start the curls at the nape.
  • With a medium-sized barreled iron, wrap one-inch sections vertically, but not to the scalp, leave about an inch of leeway and direct the curl away from the face. If using a curling iron with a clasp, wrap the hair outside and around the wand, with loose ends.
  • Use the fingers to loosen the curls when you are done with a touch of a moldable paste or wax rubbed throughout the palms. I love Kenra’s Platinum Working Wax.
  • Now, the way I described to do this initial curl tutorial leaves the ends out for more of a textured wave, rather than a defined curl. However, if the ends are sticking out like Tricia’s, simply wrap them around the wand, or if using a flat iron or other curling iron, slide the ends through in a downward motion to achieve a smoother curl.

If you have a question similar to Tricia’s that prompted this curl tutorial for medium length hair, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com. Until then, happy styling!
