Dark to Light Hair Color Correction: How to Remove Black Hair Color

Dark to light hair color correction is not an easy feat, even for the professionals. That is why this pro would never recommend removing black hair color at home. Find out why in today’s reader Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist.

Whoop, whoop its Hump Day! As today is Wednesday, it is time for another Q&A from Ask the Pro Stylist. Once again, we tackle dark to light hair color correction questions for the at-home colorist. The following comes from Ivette.

Question: Dark to Light Hair Color Correction

I’ve been dealing with this for a while now. Half of my hair had finally gotten brown, but I have pieces that are still black. And, it’s taking forever to come out. Do you have any advice on how to remove it? I was going to try the Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3, because I really don’t want to bleach my hair again. If this shampoo won’t work do you have any suggestions in what I can do? Thank you

Answer

Thanks for the question Ivette. As my cosmetology students could tell you, there is only one way to remove black hair color and that is with lightener. There are specific reasons as to why, which involve the hair structure. Future professionals spend a great deal of money to learn hair color and its chemistry. Therefore, to have a service done properly, it should only happen at a professional salon.

Shampoo 3 from Paul Mitchell is a clarifying shampoo. It cannot remove hair dye. Non-color safe shampoos will dull the luster of hair color, but not make it lighter. And on that note, I would never recommend pharmacy-brand dark to light hair color correction products.

My recommendation is to visit a salon and get a consultation. If you do not want to lighten your hair, then get a good haircut to remove the rest of the black. Unfortunately, this is the only advice I can provide.

If you have a question like today’s dark to light hair color correction, please email at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com. But please note, I only advocate for the professional hairstylist. And I will never reveal what is taught in cosmetology school. So, until then, happy styling!
