DIY Beauty Treatments for the Face, Hair and Nails
DIY beauty treatments for the face, hair and nails are simple to create with everyday items found around the home. Don’t spend your income on excessive beauty products and treatments if you don’t have to when most of what is found in the beauty aisle can be found in your own cupboards.
Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties and welcome to this Wednesday’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. This week actually combines two weekly topics in one: how-to Tuesday and Wednesday’s question.
Yesterday’s how-to column was inspired by Kristen Bell and her DIY Beauty Treatments and today answers a reader’s question about olive oil as a hairstyling tool. I decided to combine the two so as not to be redundant in my beauty blog posts this week.
Sammi from Aurora, Illinois had read one of my Examiner.com articles about olive oil for the skin and eyelashes and wanted to know if she could use it on the hair to create shine and smooth the tresses. Below is a list of DIY beauty treatments for the face, hair and nails, and it includes olive oil, which could be used for all three.
DIY Beauty Treatments for the Face, Hair and Nails
Hair: Yes, olive oil can be used on the hair for shine and on the scalp to alleviate dry scalp and flakes. However, you don’t want to smell like a salad. For shine use a nickel or dime-size amount. If you have a fragrance additive such as jasmine or lavender, easily found at health food stores, then use it. Add the olive oil and a few drops of fragrance in a small container to use on the hair. If using on the scalp, you’ll need more to treat dryness, so it is recommended to wash the hair after the oil has been applied, massaged and a fine toothcomb used to loosen scaly skin on the scalp.
Nails: Healthy cuticles mean healthy and strong nails. Cuticles need to be hydrated, especially if you have artificial nails. Olive oil moisturizes the skin around the nails, which in turn strengthens them.
Skin: There are too many DIY beauty treatments for the skin that include olive oil to use here. Why? Because olive oil is an ancient remedy from Egypt that when ingested and applied is said to have anti-aging healing effects. Some research has proven it, whereas others have negated olive oil use on stretch marks and cradle cap (which is listed above under hair), but users swear by olive oil on the skin. The pregnant Kristen Bell rubs coconut oil on her belly and uses a facial and body scrub made of honey, olive oil and brown sugar. The brown sugar exfoliates the skin, the honey tones and tightens with natural antioxidants and the olive oil hydrates.
It has also been rumored olive oil applied to the base of the eyelashes thickens sparse lashes. As someone that follows that beauty regimen nightly, I haven’t seen an increase in eyelash production, but I do not see a loss of eyelashes either. And besides, the conditioning effect cannot hurt the delicate skin around the eyes.
