Whoop, whoop, it’s Hump Day! This Wednesday’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist focuses on gray coverage for red heads.

I have a friend 60+. She does not want me to reveal her name or exact age. Sadly, I was not her hairstylist, although after my advice, I now am.

She saw a colorist near her job. It is convenient, not too pricey – middle of the road, with a pleasant staff. However, as she says, her grays at the front hairline grow back the next day.

She says this to me frequently and I reply, “Hair doesn’t grow that fast. You are exaggerating. You see the gray hair on your hairline because that is what is noticeable first.”

However, for her next appointment she purposely had her hair done on her day off. She then paid me a visit the next day. To be honest, I couldn’t believe her gray hair was still visible. It isn’t that her hair grew back in a day. The grays were immediately noticeable because the vibrant red hair color didn’t cover.

What really irked me though was the fact that she went right back to her stylist who pretended not to see the grays. They were very visible. According to my friend, the stylist even used that “gray magic” stuff.

Ok, so my advice was to ditch the colorist. There could be a couple of reasons she didn’t have optimal gray coverage, but the professional’s pretense is enough to move on. Just own the error, reapply at the hairline and give the guest what she wants. Because she didn’t, I now have a new client.

Perhaps she did not mix an N series with the vibrant red to ensure gray coverage. Despite what some professional hair color brands say, some resistant gray hair needs the colors present in the N series for optimal results. Maybe the colorist got the barrier cream to close to the hairline, preventing color coverage. Maybe she just needs glasses, or maybe my friend’s gray is stubborn as all hell. The point is, the stylist should have corrected it for her.
