Gray hair advice: A few tips for the best ways to cover the grays.
Gray hair questions are answered for this Wednesday’s beauty post, specifically, the best ways to cover the grays.
A client called with gray hair questions. She needed a touch-up, but was concerned that it had only been three weeks since her last appointment. She wanted to know if highlighting her auburn hair would eliminate the regrowth of gray hair that popped up on her widow’s peak.
I explained that adding highlights would not stop the gray hair from appearing. Having a substantial amount of regrowth in only three weeks is a good thing. It means that my client has a full and healthy head of hair. When hair has slower growth and thins it could be a sign of illness or worse yet, aging. Gasp!
Needing a touch-up every three weeks should be the least of anyone’s concerns, but it can be costly on the wallet. However, there are ways to minimize the appearance of the dreaded roots and gray hair.
For example, my client’s hair color is naturally a medium brown, but dyes her hair medium auburn. Her gray hair is minimal, less than 25%, but they are right around the hairline and at her widow’s peak. And that is always the way; the gray hair pops up right where the eye can see it.
We added a few very fine gold highlights around the hairline, on the top and blended it with her widow’s peak. It will not stop the gray hair from arriving, but the multiple colors in front will alter the appearance and blend with the gray as it comes in, creating an illusion.
To save her money, since she is having her gray hair dyed every three weeks, we opted to trim her hair every other appointment. I also suggested she purchase a tube of hair mascara to brush on the hairline when those pesky gray hairs poke through. This way she can hopefully increase the time in between touch-ups and save money covering the gray hair.
