Gray Hair Cure: Getting to the Root of the Problem

Is there a gray hair cure? A reader recently asked Ask the Pro Stylist this age-old question, and the answer if there is a cure for gray hair is below.

Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties, and welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s Q&A for Wednesday. Sabby messaged me on Facebook with a question related to a gray hair cure.

Is it true that there’s cure for grey hair? If yes, does it reverse one’s hair color?

Two years ago news broke about new research that believed there could be a gray hair cure in the near future. The content of an article I wrote at the time is below. After a few days of research, nothing has changed from what was reported in 2013. As a matter of fact, Google searches all dated back to when the story first trended.

According to the journal for Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, those who gray “develop massive oxidative stress caused by an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the follicles.” This oxidative stress causes the hair follicle to lose pigmentation and turn gray and contingent upon the level of hydrogen peroxide in the follicle, turn white.

This is hair-coloring 101; developer used in hair dye consists of hydrogen peroxide and when the hair oxidizes, the color becomes lighter. The researchers are now claiming the hydrogen peroxide levels can be regulated with a topical formula, PC-KUS. This treatment may also benefit those with the skin condition, vitiligo.

Gray Hair Cure?

Gray Hair Cure?

The enzyme, catalase, was tested topically on patients with vitiligo and the whitening of both the skin and eyelashes were reversed. So Sabby, if this gray hair cure ever makes it to market, yes, it will reverse the effects of gray hair, but that is a big if!

By the way, the photo was found on Pinterest, and is a great cut for the over 50 sexy mamas. If you have a question similar to this week’s gray hair cure query, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com. Until then, happy styling!
