Hair Color Advice: How Often Should I Highlight Over Hair Color?

Hair color advice is on the agenda for this Wednesday’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. A reader wants to know how often she should highlight her colored hair.Whoop, whoop, it’s Hump Day, and time for another question and answer with Ask the Pro Stylist. This week Adrienne wrote in for hair color advice, specifically wanting to know if she could touch-up her highlights every time she gets her regrowth done.

Hi

I’ve been having my hair colored for many years to cover up the grey. Some years ago I started using highlights. I have the touch-up and highlights done monthly. Recently I was told that I should not be having highlights done every month because it damages the hair. What should I do? Just color the grey and not do highlights?

Would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Thanks for writing in Adrienne for some very simple hair color advice. In my opinion, once a month for highlights over hair color is a bit much.

I color my regrowth of gray hair every 3-4 weeks, and highlight about every 3 months. Now while a skilled and adept professional is quite capable to highlight just the regrowth, I always air on the side of less is more. Highlights should show a contrast of hair color, and when done too often creates almost one single tone. And yes, doing it that often will damage the hair. Your hairstylist/colorist should have his or her hair color advice with a good time frame to recommend that suits your lifestyle.
