Hair Color Advice: Should I Sombré, Ombré, Rerverse or Balayage
Another reader is seeking hair color advice. She is basically not sure if the color she wants would look good or appear to have fried ends. One of the hair color techniques, sombré, ombré, rerverse or balayage (sounds like dance moves) is what she would need to accomplish her goal, so I have compiled a few pictures of what I “think” she is interested in with a little hair color advice to accomplish the hottest hair color trends of summer.
It’s Hump Day, whoop, whoop! Happy Hump Day hotties, and welcome to Wednesday’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. This week’s question comes from Tobias, who is searching for hair color advice.
Hi, I heard you were a hairstylist and have a question. So, I have long strawberry blonde hair and am thinking of dying it blonde or brown, but not near the roots. It will fade from strawberry blonde into blonde or brown. I’m not sure if this would look good or not…like if I dyed it brown at the ends, would it look like I burnt my hair?
Hi Tobias, and thanks so much for your question about hair color advice. Yes, I am a hairstylist from New York, as well as a beauty writer. I have put together a few photos of what I think might of be interest to you.
The first is a rose gold sombré seen on actress Sienna Miller slightly more than a year ago. Sombré is a professional hair color technique, which delivers a seamless, yet gradual gradation of hair color from the scalp to ends, unlike ombré, which is dark on top and abruptly changes to much lighter ends, or reverse ombré that simply redirects from light to dark.
Balayage is a customized look that requires less maintenance because there isn’t a line of regrowth. It is a skilled technique, which should only be completed by a trained professional with a lot of experience that combines ombré with subtle highlights.
Blur is somewhat of a combination of both ombré and balayage hair color techniques that blends colors together.
The biggest difference arises from who is coloring your hair, and which technique they use for creative hair color. You will never achieve these looks at home. Therefore, my first bit of hair color advice is to find someone who is proficient in hair color and has mastered one or more of the above techniques. The best way to do that is word of mouth, ask someone you see with great hair color, or simply do an Internet search.
You should then bring pictures of your desired results, and explain any and all color services you might have had done or done yourself. Be specific and detailed of your expectations and hair history.
The color you are interested in would look beautiful if done by a professional. I am not sure if strawberry blonde is your natural color or not, so I cannot be confident whether or not your hair would be damaged on the ends from the process. Only a professional could assess that. While I am a professional, I still need to see and feel your hair and take into consideration its texture, health, hair type and previous chemical services to give completely informed hair color advice.
And finally, in my opinion, brown on the ends would not “fry” your hair, especially if it is a gloss, which would add immense shine. But for optimal results, please visit a salon professional for gorgeous hair, and email me a picture of the completed look please!
