Hair Color Care: How to Care for Your Fresh Balayage
Hair color care is the topic of this Hump Day after hearing some great looks were about to be ruined by a day of sun fun and a dip in the pool. What should you do to avoid ruining your expensive salon service? Read on for fresh hair color care tips from Ask the Pro Stylist.
It’s Hump Day! Whoop, whoop, and we just wrapped our episode of Family Takeover, airing on Spike TV with Victor Antonio this coming winter. The Haggerty House finished last night and it was a crazy, emotional, and difficult experience, but also very rewarding.
Now back to the business of being me…mom, wife, writer, hairstylist, and beauty blogger for Ask the Pro Stylist, which includes Wednesday’s hair/beauty question of the week. This Hump Day we focus on hair color care.
A recent guest at the salon was having an extremely expensive balayage done on dark hair. This was the first time she was coloring her hair and very nervous. He hair had to be lightened first, and then a toner/gloss applied to bring her to the desired shade. However, she didn’t know the proper hair color care that follows, and unfortunately ill-advised in what to do after she left the salon.
The client was headed to a pool party the same day as having balayage highlights applied. To begin, never get a salon service when you are intending to play in the sun and/or swim in the ocean or a chlorinated pool. The sun will immediately fade the color, as will the water.
If timing doesn’t allot, then a hat must be worn to block the sun, and a bathing cap should be utilized. Simply pinning the hair up to avoid water when swimming is not good enough. Additionally, optimal hair color care requires sun protection products. I recommend Alterna.
Unfortunately, the colorist that worked on her hair gave her poor advice. As a professional, she should have advised the guest to return another day. While she most likely didn’t want to lose that sale, the best service is when you show a client you truly care about them, and the money they are about to spend. The guest will return because you invested the time to be honest.
She was told to use the shampoo and conditioner recommended by the salon. Of course this is always the way, and should be adhered to. But, this wasn’t going to protect the woman’s hair from the effects of the pool party. It would, however, put money into the business.
And lastly, the guest was advised to rinse her hair with cool water after jumping in the pool. Great advice…for every dip in the pool, on any hair type, but I still insist the client should have been to told to avoid the water at all costs to protect her investment.
