Hairstyles for Prom from the Catwalk

Perfect hairstyles for prom were recently seen throughout the runways of New York, Paris and Milan, especially the soft and sexy tousled updos, which were prevalent on every red carpet during awards season. Guido, Redken Global Creative Director, crafted the look for Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2015 Runway Show in Milan, and the loose chignon adorned with trendy accessories are just one of the hairstyles for prom Ask the Pro Stylist has chosen for readers as they prepare for high school’s end.

Welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s How-To Tuesday, where from now until the season begins, hairstyles for prom will be the focus of this weekly guide. The Redken professionals sent another beautiful updo to me from the Dolce & Gabanna’s Fall Winter 2015 Runway Show, where “madri e la famiglia” were celebrated in Milan.

Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a “feminine, loose chignon adorned with charming broaches, pearls and jewels that might have been found in a mother’s jewelry box in the ‘50s.” “There’s always something about this feminine, beautiful Dolce & Gabbana woman that is timeless, and every season, we just reinvent the look in small ways,” said Guido. “The whole show is about mothers, so the idea for the hair is this woman getting out of bed and just pinning her hair up in an easy, feminine and beautiful way.”

For this “pretty, but easy style that’s ideal for the everyday woman,” Guido turned to Redken’s Wind Blown 05, which gave a “soft, airy texture, but the real star of the look is the jewelry in the hair.” Guido details how to get this trendy runway look below.

Hairstyles for Prom from the Catwalk: Soft Chignon With Accessories

  • Apply a quarter-size amount of Redken Guts 10 volumizing spray-foam mousse to damp hair, working into the hair from roots to ends
  • Use fingers to create a messy natural part.
  • Blow dry the hair roughly until it is 90% dry, letting the remainder air-dry naturally.
  • Thoroughly mist Redken Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray all over dry hair to add some texture.
  • Emulsify a nickel-size amount of Redken Braid Aid 03 braid defining lotion in hands, and apply to dry hair from mid-lengths to ends for added grip.
  • Twist hair back into a loose, messy chignon that hangs over the ears, and secure with small U-shaped pins.
  • Spray Redken Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray all over for airy texture.
  • Finish the look by adding accessories or jewelry of choice.

Please note, the Redken products used in this guide to hairstyles for prom have not been sampled by Ask the Pro Stylist, and therefore are not recommended. And although the commentary has been about mothers, the style has been seen on young Hollywood stars such as Chloe Moretz. Tune in next Tuesday for more prom hairstyles. Until then, happy styling!
