Hairstylists’ Dress Code: Dress To Impress
The hairstylists’ dress code is to always look fierce. Dress to impress baby, because nobody wants his or her hair done by a schlub. If you fail to take care of yourself, then you my dear have been nailed by the Hair Police.
Happy Monday gorgeous, and thanks for stopping by to visit Ask the Pro Stylist’s weekly Hair Police column. Today we discuss the hairstylists’ dress code, and yes there is one! It’s called, “look hot!”
As a beauty school educator, it is required that the learning leaders adhere to a strict hairstylists’ dress code and regulate the future professionals as well. They are to wear black on black with a splash of black. Many salons require a similar style because the guest is the canvas, and we are simply the backdrops.
Our hair and makeup should always be done, revealing skin should be minimal, and we need to be clean and smell fresh. Our clients do not want bad breath and cigarette smoke in their face, or body odor up against their nose. Invest in Altoids, deodorant, body spray and hand lotion, because we do get up close and personal with our guests.
You are your best selling point. A fashion-forward, on trend stylist with great hair will attract attention because the guest will want your curls, shine or color. Be the hair and then be a mess on Sunday like the photo I captured from Behind the Chair.
What this generation of beauty students doesn’t realize is they have the hairstylists’ dress code in the bag. Black on black is easy. Back in the day we had an actual uniform, similar to that of nurse’s attire. We wore blue with white nurse’s shoes. There was nothing attractive about what we donned at my beauty school.
If you’re lucky enough to work in a salon that doesn’t maintain the current hairstylists’ dress code of black on black, then you should dress to impress. No one wants his or her hair done by a schlub.
