Holiday Hairstyle Guide 2014: Braids and Waves

This Tuesday’s holiday hairstyle guide for 2014 focuses on two popular looks, a messy braided updo, and smooth, glam waves. The how-to for each look is detailed within.

Happy Tuesday readers! If you tuned in on Monday in search of the hair police column, I apologize; I fortunately didn’t notice any hair violations this past weekend.

Today, however, we turn our attention toward holiday hairstyles. This Tuesday marks the first day of Hanukkah, so Happy Hanukkah to all of my friends. And with Christmas only 9 days away and the holiday party season in full swing, it’s time to figure out how to wear the hair. The following holiday hairstyle guide for 2014 begins with braids, and finishes with one of my favorite, timeless looks.

I caught the following braid on Behind the Chair a while back and saved it for the holidays. The stylists used ColorProof hair care products. I haven’t had the pleasure to sample the line, and cannot myself honestly recommend, but the source is a reliable and caters to professionals.

  • Braid hair when it is damp and be sure to apply ColorProof FiberBlast™ Texture Crème throughout to give the hair pliability and texture that catches loose ends, even on layered hair.
  • If the hair is already dry, spray with ColorProof DrySpell™ Color Protect Dry Shampoo to add texture and grip to the hair.

  • Prior to braiding, section hair and lightly mist with ColorProof AllAround™ Color Protect Working Hairspray to keep each section separate and to prevent pieces from falling out.
  •  Begin the braid by taking a very small section right at the part/hairline and split it into three subsections.
  • To achieve a “fatter” braid, braid inside out, looping the middle section over and under the outer sections, while adding hair to each section.
  • Once the braid is complete and secured with a clear elastic, tug lightly at each loop, starting at the top and working your way down to loosen and make each loop appear thicker.
  • Crisscrossing braids either in the back or on top of the head is a great way to make simple braids look more intricate. It’s also good for hiding the ends and elastics.

  • Slightly messy braids appear romantic and ethereal. If need be, tuck away any unwanted strands by smoothing into place with fingertips using ColorProof RuleBreaker™ Firm Flexible Wax.
  • Once your style is complete, spray all over with ColorProof HardCore™ Epic Hold Color Protect Hairspray to set your style.
  • Finish with an allover mist of ColorProof HumidityRx™ Anti-Frizz Weatherproof Spray to eliminate frizz and flyaways.

Holiday Hairstyle Guide: Jane The Virgin’s Petra Look

Michelle Rene Elam, Department Head Hair for CW’s Jane the Virgin, styles Yael Groblas’ hair for the TV show and gave a little insight into recreating Petra’s signature style.

Yael’s character is very kept, represents money and all that it can buy, even though this is not always the whole truth (stay tuned for some upcoming flashbacks). Her hair is tender but very healthy; she is a pro at keeping on top of all that her hair needs to maintain health, making my job smoother.

  • To get her look, I use Living Proof Restore Target Repair Cream on her ends.
  • Then, mist her hair all over with White Sands Liquid Texture Firm Thermal Styling Spray to protect and smooth during the blow dry, while using a T3 anti-gravity 2.5″ Barrel Ceramic Brush to create smooth volume.
  • Her style is a specific mix of noir 1920s & 21st Century mod glam. To create this style and help last all day, I set her using a 3/4 – 1” marcel iron angling it at 2:00/7:00 all the way around.
  • A big bone comb and Mason Pearson brush keeps the flowing shape.
  • On humid outdoor scenes I keep Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray handy and in heavy fog I even toss on a rain cap.
