Home Hair Treatments for Buildup: Apple Cider Vinegar
Home hair treatments for nasty buildup are affordable and an organic way to treat excess product use. Apple Cider Vinegar balances the hair’s natural pH, however caution should always be noted when using anything from home.
Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day! Welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s Wednesday Q&A, which focuses on home hair treatments, specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar. A reader, Margaret, has buildup, tried dish soap, which didn’t work and wants to know about vinegar.
I tried the dish soap, and when I went to get my haircut I had tons of buildup. It didn’t work. Is vinegar any good?
I have written about Dawn Dish Soap before, and I DO NOT recommend it, especially on color or chemically treated hair. I do however have a few suggestions for home hair treatments to rid the hair of buildup.
Home Hair Treatments for Buildup
Lemon is a magical little fruit that cleanses from the inside out. It could be used as deodorant, skin brightener and hair lightener (in the sun.) The problem is you need a few to create enough liquid, mixed with water, to have an affect on hair product buildup.
Stop Using Cheap Hair Care Products
That’s pretty self-explanatory. Hairsprays, styling tools and retail brand hair care are inexpensive, but create buildup. Do not spray product too close to the scalp, and brush the hair repeatedly throughout the day.
ACV
Apple Cider Vinegar balances the pH of the hair. It is one of the go-to home hair treatments for dandruff and itchy scalp, and is rumored to stimulate hair growth. To use Apple Cider Vinegar as a home hair treatment for excessive buildup, mix 1/3 cup ACV with one quart of warm (filtered) water and store in a spray bottle in the bath. Apply after shampooing and comb through with a fine toothcomb. You can either rinse completely or leave it on for a deeper treatment. Use a few times a week, or on a weekend at home. Use less often on color treated hair.
Clarifying Shampoo
Use a professional clarifying shampoo to keep buildup at bay. I recommend Kenra Clarifying Shampoo. Invest in professional hair care brands. They cost a little more money, but in the long run keep you from spending extra on salon visits or other home hair treatments for buildup. Inexpensive products tend to lead to excessive buildup.
