My family and I, along with the rest of the world, had the pleasure of seeing Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire this weekend, and what stood out, to me, was Katniss Everdeen’s unsurpassable beauty, which caused me to ponder how any person in their right mind could ever consider Jennifer Lawrence fat, overweight, pudgy or any other ignorant name the media has thrown at her.
Having read the trilogy, I was slightly disappointed with the first installment of The Hunger Games, however Catching Fire, in my opinion remained truer to the Suzanne Collins novel than its predecessor. But it wasn’t just the story that struck me and kept me and my children captivated, it was Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and all of her splendor that gave me pause.
Whether Jennifer Lawrence was filthy and without makeup in the heat of a battle, exposing her natural beauty, or donned in all of the Capitol glory, the 23-year-old Oscar-winning actress owned the screen. And I have to say, my favorite scene, which expressed her statuesque perfection beautifully, was when the tributes took to their chariots once again and Katniss Everdeen lit up as the “girl on fire”.
The skintight and form fitted costumes of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire left little to the imagination and the thought that the media could portray her as overweight, pudgy or whatever obtuse adjective they could devise to describe the 5’10 ½” Lawrence baffled me. There isn’t an inch to pinch, or at least it wasn’t visible in this latest installment. The only feature about Jennifer Lawrence that overwhelmed me was how abundantly beautiful she is with or without makeup, a fact that possibly has spurred naysayers to bash her out of their own insecurities.
I am not a film critic, but I was extremely pleased with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and cannot wait for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. If you have not read The Hunger Games Trilogy, I highly recommend it, as books always provide the details the movies don’t have the time and resources to fill, and the boxed set make a superb holiday gift idea.
