Keratin Questions, Curls Gone And Dawn Dish Detergent: Oy!
Keratin questions are the topic of this Wednesday’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. It seems a recipient of the smoothing treatment has curls no more. But how does Dawn fit in? Find out below!
Hello gorgeous! Whoop, whoop its Hump Day, which means it is time for Ask the Pro Stylist’s Q&A of the week. This week’s reader has keratin questions.
During a tennis match of emails, it would appear Marissa wants her curls back. However, without a proper consultation that includes seeing and feeling the hair, I have no good answers.
Good morning. I’m just writing to ask you about a keratin done in my hair last May. My curls have not come back. I was wondering what you could suggest? I tried the Dawn Dish Soap and it didn’t do anything. Honestly, it didn’t even take my color out. So, I don’t even know. But all I know is that I’ve been wanting my curls back and I don’t know how to get it.
I followed up with a series of questions such as which keratin brand, have you had any haircuts, etc.? Her reply was maybe Brazilian, her friend did it and her hair has been cut.
Friends, don’t let friends do your hair unless they have a cosmetology license with experience! After some more correspondences, she then said she wants to get a perm.
OK, so here are my many issues with the reader’s keratin questions. To begin, Dawn is DISH DETERGENT, not shampoo. It will remove buildup and oil from the cuticle, but not color or chemical services. Keratin is a chemical service. Dawn is BAD to use on the hair. It will cause damage with excessive use, open the cuticle to the elements and make your hair very dry! STOP!
Next, without seeing and feeling her hair or knowing exactly which Keratin was applied, I cannot advise. In addition, I need to know her texture and curl pattern prior to the service. Also, exactly how long ago was it. The email is from July. Was it May, 2 months prior or in 2016? If it is only 2-months old, it hasn’t had sufficient time to grow out.Generally speaking, smoothing treatments are not permanent and depending upon the brand, are out in a few weeks/months.
And what is the hair history? How many treatments have been done prior. As you can see, hair is not as simple as the wannabe bloggers and vloggers think. There is a great deal of training involved.
I would return to the friend and discuss the concerns with her. But, if she isn’t a professional or one in training, she probably is clueless.
The bottom line is she most likely needs to wait for the regrowth to be substantial enough to notice her bounce again. A permanent wave will give movement back, but again, she needs a pro’s hands in that hair for an in-depth consultation.
