Kylie Jenner Cornrows Debate: Amandla Stenberg Slams Kylie’s Hair
The Kylie Jenner cornrows debate has reached ridiculous proportions after Jenner and Amandla Stenberg got into it on Instagram, following a Saturday post of Kylie in cornrows. Over 111,000 comments (and counting) later and the war rages on, which is why the dispute has landed on Monday’s Hair Police from Ask the Pro Stylist.
Happy Monday gorgeous, and welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s Hair Police column. The Kylie Jenner cornrows debate raged on and on over social media Sunday after the socialite posted a photo of herself captioned by, “I woke up like diss.” Actress Amandla Stenberg, best known as Rue in the Hunger Games, reacted to Jenner’s look, and it wasn’t positive.
@novemberskyys when u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.”
Kylie fired back with, “@amandlastenberg Mad if I don’t, Mad if I do…. Go hang w Jaden or something,” a direct hit towards her past relationship with Jaden Smith. The 17-year-old reality TV star is apparently “horrified” over the backlash she has received, including the hate from the 16-year-old actress.
The problem is the amount of power given to reality TV stars and the focus of self-obsession the Kardashian Klan perpetuates. Most of the comments about the Kylie Jenner cornrows are valid, with many wanting the young Jenner to utilize her purported social consciousness to draw focus to the injustices black people face every day.
How about this: Instead of jumping all over Kylie Jenner (who I am not a fan of) for wearing cornrows, maybe we all should, all races, learn to respect one another. Mom always said, “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing.”
Social media has offered up a platform for people to bash others when they wouldn’t say these things to someone’s face. We may not always agree, but keeping the negative flowing is just not going to help the human race, period. If the Kylie Jenner cornrows opens up a positive dialogue, then it is effective, but nothing good comes from a pissing match, because no one should have anything negative to say about the hairstyle, whether it is worn on black women or white.
