Where to learn how to apply makeup, eye shadow and other cosmetics answers this week’s beauty advice question which comes from a reader yearning to understand the tricks of the makeup trade.
Dear Deirdre,
I am not sure if your field of expertise is strictly hair or if it includes the entire beauty world, but I would like to know where to find the best place in NYC to learn how to apply makeup?
Thank you,
Nicole
My original response to Nicole was, yes all cosmetologists in the industry are or at least should be knowledgeable in every facet of the beauty field and to call or look up the MUD Academy to learn how to apply makeup. The best of the best makeup artists have graduated from the Make-Up Designory and they have two convenient locations in Manhattan.
Applying makeup isn’t as simple as merely copying the instructions from the back of an eye shadow case or heading into a local CVS to purchase foundation that you think may match your skin tone. Even watching online videos aren’t suitable for all as there are a multitude of facets to consider when applying makeup without looking like a clown such as face shape, eye shape, nose size, skin texture and tone, and eye color, to name only a few. Learning your “season” also optimizes which makeup to purchase by always trying to remain within your own colors. Additionally, applying eye shadow on aging eyes with drooping lids will be different for women in their 40s and above as it is for our younger counterparts. Learning from a real professional is key, not just a pretty girl on YouTube or a wordy article on some beauty blog from a writer who has zero beauty experience in the field.
Since answering Nicole’s makeup question, an interesting email has crossed my inbox from Make Up For Ever. The Make Up For Ever professionals have joined forces with Skillshare to bring the beauty tricks of the trade directly to your home via an online makeup course.
The first video lecture takes place on Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. covering how to create your own subtle daytime eye to the sultry evening smoky eye with their eye makeup essentials. After the online course is over, upload both looks for expert feedback from the Make Up For Ever professionals.
I will certainly be tuning in to learn the makeup application tips because continuing education, in any field, is a must to bring the absolute best to our clientele.
If you have any beauty questions relating to hair, makeup or skin care, please email me at DeirdreAHaggerty@gmail.com and I will be happy to answer and post it here for Wednesday’s beauty advice column.
