Long Hair Tutorial: How to Curl the Hair with a Flat Iron
Need a long hair tutorial to learn how to curl or wave the hair with a flat iron? Just because pin straight hair isn’t the hottest hair trend doesn’t mean the old flat iron needs to be yesterday’s garbage. In fact, the current look needs a little bend from the straightening tool.
Today’s Ask the Pro Stylist how-to guide is a long hair tutorial, which could also be used on short hair as well. A few months back a reader asked how to create Kelly Ripa’s waves, and this technique does the job too. This long hair tutorial is also for a dear friend who is somewhat flatiron-obsessed, but wanted to know how to add curls or waves effortlessly.
NYFW brought out the hottest hair trends. Celebrity stylists all agree a tousled bedhead has taken over for the perfect bouncy blowout and pin straight hair. Instead, use your flat iron to create a bend and for finer-haired folks, add texture with a texturizing powder such as Volumizing Therapy from BioSilk.
Long Hair Tutorial: How to Curl the Hair with a Flat Iron
The picture above is myself. I have a thick hair with natural curl and unruly waves. In order to decrease any frizz I have to blow-dry it straight first and for the waves in the picture, I used a flat iron. I took one-inch sections starting at the nape and about halfway down the section, bent the hair around the iron, leaving out about one to two inches of hair. Some pieces had more curl, while others just a bend. But you can really manipulate the look with the flat iron and the amount of hair used within each section.
I don’t need texture, I have enough of it, however I used the powder to create lift and volume on a client, and she was amazed. After you use the iron to construct a little or a lot of bend, take sections throughout the crown and on top and shake a small amount of the powder into the hair. Use your fingers to manipulate the waves and increase the volume.
