Man Bun Guide: How to make a man bun
The man bun! Some say why, others say why not. A guide for those, like my SON who want to know how to make a man bun, is featured in today’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist!
Whoop, whoop, happy Hump Day hotties, and welcome to Wednesday’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist! Today we tackle the man bun, a question my son, pictured above and below, was curious about.
Not even my own son is immune to my wrath when it comes my rant about dumb things young people do, such as searching the Internet for answers that are right in front of you. While the Web has become a great source of valuable information, it has also become a cheat sheet, making all people lazy.
I have a problem with getting resources off the Internet to do hair, because as I have said in the past, it more often than not is wrong, chemical services and hair cuts shouldn’t be done at home. If you are not a professional, you will undoubtedly not comprehend the fullness of the information.
For instance, when my son, whose hair I cut from medium length to an Adam Levine-type buzz, wanted a topknot or man bun, instead of texting me, he Googled it. Now that, in and of itself isn’t terrible. But what peeved me to NO END was the information he found about the buzz I gave him and the size blades to use. What he didn’t understand is every clipper is different, and every brand utilizes a different sizing system, not to mention, I DID GO TO GIVE HIM A FADE AND HE SAID NO! Kids! Yes, our families are the most frustrating of clients.
So, because my son wanted to know how to do a man bun, I have written a guide here in the hopes some of you stumble upon it and receive correct information on the InterWeb (wink, wink).
Man Bun Guide
- Gather the hair into a high ponytail as pictured, or low if you have longer hair and want it further down the head, and then wrap a few times in an elastic band.
- To do this you need to use both hands.
- Wrap the band around one wrist as you smooth the hair together.
- Hold the hair together with the hand that has the band.
- Use the other hand to pull the band over the hand and onto the hair, but don’t let go.
- Twist the band to create an x and wrap the new loop over the hair again.
- Repeat that step, but instead of pulling the hair through on the third attempt only take out half, creating a bump.
- Hold the bump and wrap the elastic around it one more time as you did above.
- Tuck the ends into the elastic.
- Voila, man bump.
