Maskne Help: Treatment For Mask Acne On Aging Skin

TGIF!

TGIF gorgeous! Since it is Friday, it is time for another weekly favorite beauty product of Ask the Pro Stylist. Today we get maskne help for aging skin.

What is Maskne?

Maskne is a phrase used to describe mask acne. It occurs differently, with some having clear breakouts of pimples while others show tiny bumps. The term developed during the earlier months of the pandemic. In addition, it’s severity could be determined by length of use of a face mask and the amount of coverings used.

For instance, on days in the salon where I wear a mask and a face shield without pause, I develop deep pimples on my chin.

According to Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Mona Gohara in an interview in The New York Times[1], mask acne is “very real.” Maskne is made worse from multiple layers of face coverings, chafing, heat and sweat. The doctor offers tips like what is suggested below, which I had to learn through trial and error as a beauty professional.

To begin, face makeup was non-existent on work days. Not because anyone advised me not to, but for the sheer after-effect of a makeup mess. As such, the good doctor also recommends limiting foundation. Instead, use a tinted moisturizer and a good face cream. However, if you have aging skin, this is a must regardless. Actually, men and women of all ages should always use a moisturizer.

Next, wear clean masks. This should not be a recommendation, but a habit. Because of my fear of cooties, and tips revealed back in March when masks became advisable, this was a no-brainer.

Finally, I use this Friday’s Favorite beauty product of the week. While all the above tips helped, the heat, sweat and chaffing hurt my skin. Not often, but sometimes a zit would reveal its ugly head. When that happened, I turned to Murad’s Resurgence Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel.

Aging skin requires a bit more TLC than other skin types. No regimen should adhere to excess face washing because it causes drying. However, Benzoyl Peroxide alone to prevent breakouts will also dry the skin, especially as it ages.

This multi-acid peel is ideal for all skin types. It exfoliates, has antioxidants, nourishes and hydrates. For me, my pimples were less severe or gone altogether by morning.

Happy Styling!
