Natural Nail Advice: Should I give my nails a break?

Important natural nail advice for all artificial nail lovers is the topic of this week’s Q&A. Should I give my nails a break? Ask the Pro Stylist says yes!

Whoop, whoop it’s Hump Day and time for another weekly Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. This week’s reader wants natural nail advice, specifically, Monica questioned if she should give her gel manicure a break.

Hi, I saw a few of your posts about gel manicures and want to know if I should give my fake nails a rest. I visit the nail salon every 2-3 weeks, but one nail just broke. Because the break exposes my natural nail, I was wondering if I should stop going.

Thanks for writing in Monica. The quest for natural nail advice is a good one. It is always advisable to leave the nails alone after about 8-weeks of artificial or gel manicures. Therefore, I suggest going au natural for at least 1-2 weeks.

While the nails are natural we could see if there are any infections and nail splits. Additionally, if the nail bed appears uneven or ridgy, it shows excessive filing. In this case, we would want to strengthen the nails as much as possible. This is why the use of nail drills to file and buff the nails is frowned upon. Consequently, nail damage can occur.

While the nails are artificial free, it is best to condition them daily, if not twice a day, with nail oil. Use hand cream that is beneficial to nail growth and invest in a clear nail strengthener. I recommend Almond Hand and Nail Cream from The Body Shop and Nailtiques for strong nails.
