Professional Hair Color Advice: How To Lighten Properly

Professional hair color advice is on today’s agenda. Because it is Wednesday, it is time for another weekly Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist.

It’s Hump Day, whoop, and whoop! Since today is for answering readers’ queries, today’s Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist focuses on professional hair color advice.

I was visibly absent last Wednesday due to Thanksgiving. I hope it was full of blessings and good food. As it is a new week, it is back to business, the business of professional hair color advice.

Robyn, a hairstylist, has a question for coloring a client’s hair lighter. Since she is a “little out of practice,” she wants advice to color a friend’s hair.

According to Robyn, He hair is dark, a natural 3/4 base with grey. It currently has layers of color and the ends are ombré blonde, maybe about a 7/8 base. What we want is to take the top a little lighter but not as light as the ends are currently. Additionally, she wants the ends lighter, so still ombré. I don’t know how best to achieve this.

Thank you in advance,

Kind regards Robyn.

To begin, my answer is to lighten the hair with layers of color to a level 6. Stripping is the same as lightening; however determining which method is a matter for an in-depth consultation. This can occur with a color remover, sold in a professional beauty supply, a soap cap formula (bleach, 10 volume, shampoo), or straight lightening. Either way you will need to manage the integrity of the hair–use Olaplex or Continuum and deep condition. Additionally, a good haircut will be necessary.
