Prom Hair Trends: Add Detail to Your Prom Hairstyle with Accessories

This year’s prom hair trends come straight off the runway and red carpets. Whether you wear your hair all down, braided, in an updo, half-up/half-down, with curls or straight, you will want to add detail with fashionable accessories for prom.

Hello gorgeous! Welcome to Ask the Pro Stylist’s How-To Tuesday guide dedicated to prom. This week we have a few ideas for the hottest prom hair trends, adding accessories.

There are many affordable ways to add detail to your prom hairstyle, and a vast array of ideas to be unique, because nowadays Facebook pages are created to avoid wearing matching dresses, and rumor has it “bitches be crazy” if someone is similar in color, style or design. I am extremely thankful for the era prior to the digital revolution when we really DIDN’T CARE!

If you are creative and have a little time to make your own hair accessories, Jo Blackwell-Preston, Owner of Dop Dop Salon (NYC), has a few thoughts on how to make a statement wearing 2015’s prom trends. From your jewelry box to chopsticks, the ideas are endless. And if you are going to a salon, run them by your stylist first for his/her thoughts. As soon as I saw my girl Jazzy’s prom dress I knew exactly what I’d do, which wowed her, so this is for you my love.

Prom Hair Trends: Add Detail with Tips From Dop Dop

  • Often the best accessories come from your own jewelry box. Find a beautiful diamond or crystal bracelet and use bobby pins to drape it at the bottom of a chignon or weave the bracelet into a braid and secure with pins.

  • Dangling earrings also create an easy, show-stopping look.  Run a bobby pin through the earring clasp and secure to one side of a chignon.
  • To dress up a look, add an embellished comb or brooch (could be an heirloom) with a simple low chignon.  Use a few bobby pins to secure the broach at the chignon. If you prefer to wear your hair down, create a deep side part and curl hair with the KISS InstaWave and place the embellished comb above the ear.
  • Chopsticks are very thin and can completely transform a look. Use high-end black enamel or embellished chopsticks to create a French twist, bun or knot.

I love Jo’s ideas, and want to add: Peruse your mom or grandmother’s jewelry box for pieces that could be pulled apart and used in the hair also. Or, if you are all thumbs you could simply purchase the hottest prom hair trends and:

  • Braid in pink floral Hair Swag from Claire’s.
  • Decorate with a Lupe Golden Locks Headpiece from Charming Charlie.
  • Pin in 1 or 3 Chiffon Flowers with Opaque Shiny Stones Hair Clip.
  • Order Baby’s Breath or other small flowers from a local florist for a fresh loo for prom.

Visit next Tuesday when more looks are covered for the end of the year gala similar to this week’s prom hair trends: accessories. Until then, happy styling!
