Recommended Hair Products and Hot Tools
Recommended hair products and hot tools will vary from hair type to hair type. This week a reader and fan of OUAT wants to know the best hair products and hot tools to use on her fine hair to emulate Regina’s (Lana Parrilla) onset look.
Whoop, whoop, it’s Hump Day and time for another weekly Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. This week a reader, Kass, has a question about the hairstyles from ABC’s Once Upon a Time.
Hi, I found you by searching OUAT hair tips. I love that show, especially Regina’s hair. It baffles me how she can have so many blended layers that flip out and gorgeous short layers that curl back and lay flat.
My question is about hot tools. What flat iron or blow dryer do you like to use? I have a wet to dry Alvanti flat iron that I feel like rather than leaving my hair shiny and bouncy, leaves it greasy looking and lifeless. I only use it on dry hair though. as I didn’t like how long it took to go over it wet. I use it at about 360-degrees, but have no idea which heat setting I should use. I have fine Caucasian hair, but in abundance.
I also have the T3 tourmaline hair dryer that had high reviews, but doesn’t seem to dry it faster or make it shinier. It takes a long time to dry my thick hair. I’ve started using Got2b Mind Blowing Mousse, which does seem to help my style.
The Got2b Glued Hair Spray used to be really good, but not anymore. It sets my hair, but is not brush-able, so any tools or product advice be great.
Again I love OUAT hair and would love to read more about styling tips in future blog posts. I read that you style Jennifer Morrison’s lovely long locks.
Thanks, Kass Brinkley
Well thanks for the kind words Kass. I should clarify; I am not the stylist who cares for Jennifer Morrison’s lovely locks, although I’d love the honor. I wrote the article with backstage tips sent to me from the brand’s PR people. However, I am a licensed hairstylist, beauty educator, and beauty writer. I can offer you recommended hair products and hot tools, along with tips for great hair. But without actually seeing and feeling your hair, I am flying off the cuff!
It sounds like you need speed, efficiency, and a working hold to tame your hair. I use CHI 2 Touch Dryer for it’s various speeds and heat and professional results. It appears your hair is straight; therefore a flat iron is not necessary as long as you fully dry your hair with a large paddle brush and finish with a large round brush. If you insist on a flat ion, set it only to 360-degrees; you don’t need higher, and avoid wet-dry irons…they are a waste of money. I prefer CHI or Paul Mitchell flat irons.
For easy hold and shine without weighing your hair down and making it greasy, I would use Paul Mitchell’s Express Style Quick Slip Styling Cream, Hot Off The Press Thermal Protection Spray when using a hot iron, and Worked Up Working Spray for workable hold.
