It’s Hump Day
Whoop, whoop! It’s Hump Day gorgeous. Happy Wednesday! I hope this finds you healthy. It’s been a minute since responding to a beauty question for Ask the Pro Stylist . This week a few readers had similar same day hair color and keratin questions.
Popular Hair Service Question #1
Hello,
I am reading your post about being able to do a keratin and color at the same time. It said do the color first. My only concern is that you must use clarifying shampoo (which strips the hair of everything) at the beginning of keratin. So, will this strip the color off?
Ask the Pro Stylist Response One
Hi – thanks for writing! I had to search for the piece, which was a few years back.
To begin, a couple of things things: Clarifying shampoo does not strip color. Only chemicals or lightener will do that. Clarifying dulls color. Since the advice you read is around 6 years old, the current thought is now a bit different.
The beauty industry is constantly evolving and the best answer depends on the brand. Now with Keratin Complex you can do it all the same day. However, the steps are altered depending on if you lighten or color. Any professional following the manufacturer’s directions will ensure you have the best service, in the proper order to maintain both the keratin and the color. The actual chemicals within smoothing treatments dull color, so if you are waiting in between hair services, I would do the smoothing treatment, then the hair color.
Popular Hair Service Question Two
Hello, I have been searching the internet for weeks for this answer. I know you can do both processes in same day, but no one tells you what comes first. Do you wash hair with clarifying shampoo when you rinse out the color treatment before you start the keratin? Would that fade the color, because clarifying usually does pull out my color? Would hot iron fade the color (Not metallic, just regular color and highlights)? I would be so grateful for this information.
Thank you.
Thanks for the question. When doing both on the same day, the color is NOT shampooed out, but rinsed only. The professional doing the service knows the correct way to do the process, depending on which keratin brand they are using and following manufacturer’s directions. In general, the shampoo prewash before the smoothing treatment is done prior to hair coloring. Clarifying shampoo does NOT remove color, but it will fade semi & demi colors. The iron at the end of the service will not fade the color.
Added Note
All hair services, including smoothing treatments and hair color should only be done by a licensed professional. If you are asking me these questions, I tend to think you are not a cosmetologist. While these products are available at many retailers, they are not of professional grade quality.
Happy Styling!
I appreciate all the questions. However, as a licensed professional. I only advocate for the salon. But, I am always happy to answer any and all queries. Remember, stay home and stay safe. Additional comments or questions could be sent to asktheprostylist@gmail.com. Until then, Happy Holidays and happy styling!
