Women’s Facial Hair And Dermaplaning: Does It Help Terminal Hair?
Women’s facial hair is of major concern for many, especially terminal hair that requires daily upkeep. One reader has a question regarding dermaplaning and terminal hair, hence today’s Q&A.
It’s Hump Day, whoop, whoop! As such it is time for another Q&A with Ask the Pro Stylist. This Wednesday a reader, Paige, has concerns regarding terminal women’s facial hair and dermaplaning.
Hi, my name is Paige and I was researching dermaplaning when I came across your article. At the end of your article, you include the tidbit about your husband asking about 5 o’clock shadow and how women can suffer from terminal hair on the face due to hormones. I am one of those people. I am 24-years-old and suffer with this issue daily since I was in high school.
It didn’t used to be so bad; back then I only had to take care of it about once a week. I’ve noticed a definite increase in hair growth rate over the last couple years. Does dermaplaning make an impact on terminal hair?
If I’m leaving the house on a particular day, I MUST shave my face with the best, sharpest blades and most moisturizing products. Otherwise people can easily see the dark skin, stubble, acne, etc. It’s miserable. I have a 5’o’clock shadow more often than some men do.
Will dermaplaning allow me to not shave every single day until my next treatment, or will the stubble be back later? I’m asking because I cannot pay daily or really weekly to get that service. Plus it’s embarrassing to walk around with a stubbly beard. It goes from my sideburns to my chin to my neck. Is dermaplaning worth it?
Thanks in advance.
Paige
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Dermaplaning is a service that occurs approximately every 6-8 weeks prior to a facial. It’s an exfoliation treatment that removes excess skin, and as a bonus, vellus hair is affected.
While it’s fairly inexpensive, your best option is laser hair removal. The manual exfoliation tremoves the outer layer of dead skin cells using a #10 surgical blade.
The idea mimics an old-fashioned shave, sans the cream. However, dermaplaning rejuvenates the skin without the use of chemicals. As a result, the skin is left vibrant, soft and smooth, ideal for additional hydration or treatments, or upcoming red carpet events and photo shoots where a perfect canvas is a must.
The attached video shows the procedure and explains in detail terminal women’s facial hair. In short, the structure of the hair from the inside remains the same via any type of shaving technique, including terminal.
